TCS NQT Verbal Ability Questions

Verbal Ability Overview

The Verbal Ability sub-section of the TCS NQT Foundation round evaluates your English language proficiency. You can expect 20-25 questions covering grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and sentence structuring. This section is often the fastest to complete — strong readers can finish it in 20-25 minutes, banking extra time for the tougher Numerical Ability questions.

Grammar Essentials

Most grammar-based questions in TCS NQT test a handful of core rules. Master these and you can answer error detection questions with confidence.
  • Subject-Verb Agreement: Singular subjects take singular verbs ("Each of the students was present")
  • Tense Consistency: Don't mix past and present tense within the same clause
  • Pronoun Reference: Every pronoun must clearly refer to a specific noun
  • Parallel Structure: Items in a list should follow the same grammatical form
  • Articles: Use "an" before vowel sounds (not just vowel letters) — "an hour" but "a university"
  • Preposition Usage: Common errors include "discuss about" (correct: "discuss"), "comprise of" (correct: "comprise")
  • Modifiers: Dangling modifiers are a frequent trap — the modifier must logically refer to the subject

Reading Comprehension Strategy

RC passages in TCS NQT are typically 150-250 words long with 3-4 questions each. Here is an efficient approach.
  • Read the questions before the passage — you'll know exactly what to look for
  • Identify the main idea in the first and last paragraphs
  • For inference questions, the answer is never directly stated — look for implied meaning
  • Eliminate extreme answer choices — RC answers are rarely absolute ("always", "never")
  • Don't bring outside knowledge — answer strictly based on the passage content
  • Time limit: Spend no more than 4-5 minutes on an entire RC set

Build a daily reading habit with editorials from newspapers or magazines. This naturally improves vocabulary, comprehension speed, and grammar intuition — all tested in the Verbal section.

Read the following passage and answer the question: "The phenomenon of cognitive offloading — relying on external tools like smartphones and search engines to store and retrieve information — has sparked debate among researchers. Some argue it frees mental resources for higher-order thinking, while others warn it may weaken our capacity for deep, sustained recall. A 2024 study found that participants who habitually used digital aids performed comparably on immediate recall tasks but showed measurably poorer performance when tested after a 48-hour delay without access to their devices." What can be most reasonably inferred from the passage?
