Three Tracks Overview
Cognizant's Analyst Trainee program offers three distinct career tracks, each designed for different skill sets and career aspirations. Understanding what each track involves will help you prepare effectively and indicate your preference during the hiring process.

Track 1: IT & Integrated Smart Operations (IT & ISO)
The IT & ISO track is the most technically demanding of the three and is ideal for candidates with a Computer Science, IT, or allied background. You will work on databases, application support, testing, and data analytics projects.
What you will do:
- •Work with databases — write and optimize CRUD operations, stored procedures, and complex queries
- •Prepare and execute test cases for application validation and quality assurance
- •Analyze incidents and tickets to identify patterns and root causes
- •Use ITSM tools (ServiceNow, BMC Remedy) for incident and change management workflows
- •Perform data analytics tasks including data extraction, transformation, and reporting
- •Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support application lifecycle management
- •Document technical procedures and create runbooks for operational processes
The IT & ISO track has stricter eligibility criteria — you need a BCA, BSc (CS/IT/allied), or degree in Math, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, or Electronics with 60% aggregate. Other 3-year degrees are not eligible for this track.
Track 1: IT & ISO — Skills You Should Develop
To excel in the IT & ISO track, focus on building these skills before joining:
- •SQL fundamentals — SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, JOINs, GROUP BY, subqueries, stored procedures
- •Basic programming — at least one language (Python, Java, or C) with understanding of arrays, strings, and logic building
- •Testing concepts — unit testing, integration testing, test case design, defect lifecycle
- •ITSM basics — incident management, problem management, change management workflows
- •Data analytics — basic Excel/spreadsheet skills, data cleaning, pivot tables, simple visualizations
- •Communication — ability to write clear incident reports and technical documentation
Start practicing SQL on platforms like HackerRank SQL track or SQLZoo. Real-world database skills are the most valued competency in this track.
Track 2: Multicloud
The Multicloud track focuses on cloud infrastructure management and server administration. You will be responsible for maintaining production environments, handling incidents, and ensuring system uptime across multiple cloud platforms.
What you will do:
- •Maintain and monitor production servers across on-premise and cloud environments
- •Perform incident management — triage, diagnose, and resolve infrastructure issues
- •Troubleshoot across multiple technology domains: Windows Server, Linux, Networking, Database, Storage, and Cloud
- •Execute routine maintenance tasks including patching, backups, and health checks
- •Work with monitoring tools to track system performance and availability metrics
- •Participate in shift rotations to ensure 24x7 infrastructure support
- •Escalate complex issues to senior engineers and document resolution steps
Track 2: Multicloud — Skills You Should Develop
To prepare for the Multicloud track, focus on these foundational skills:
- •Operating Systems — Windows Server basics (Active Directory, Group Policy, file sharing) and Linux fundamentals (commands, file system, permissions)
- •Networking — TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, firewalls, basic subnetting, ping/traceroute troubleshooting
- •Cloud basics — understanding of AWS/Azure/GCP concepts: VMs, storage buckets, IAM, basic networking
- •Database fundamentals — basic SQL queries, backup/restore concepts, connection troubleshooting
- •Storage concepts — SAN, NAS, disk management, RAID levels
- •Monitoring tools awareness — Nagios, Zabbix, CloudWatch, or similar monitoring platforms
- •Documentation — ability to write clear runbooks and incident reports
The Multicloud track accepts any 3-year degree with 50% marks. If you are from a non-CS background, start with free cloud courses on AWS Skill Builder or Microsoft Learn to build foundational knowledge.
Track 3: Digital Workplace Services (DWS)
The Digital Workplace Services track is centered on end-user technical support. You will be the first point of contact for employees experiencing IT issues, providing solutions through remote and on-site support.
What you will do:
- •Provide first-line IT support to end users via phone, email, chat, or in-person
- •Troubleshoot hardware issues — laptops, desktops, printers, monitors, docking stations
- •Resolve software issues — OS errors, application crashes, driver conflicts, email configuration
- •Manage user accounts — password resets, access provisioning, Active Directory operations
- •Create and maintain self-service knowledge base articles for common issues
- •Log, categorize, and track support tickets using ITSM tools
- •Escalate unresolved issues to second-line or specialized support teams
- •Participate in IT asset management — inventory tracking, hardware deployment, and decommissioning
Track 3: DWS — Skills You Should Develop
Success in the DWS track depends heavily on communication skills and customer service orientation:
- •Customer service mindset — patience, empathy, and the ability to explain technical concepts in simple terms
- •Windows troubleshooting — boot issues, blue screens, driver problems, Windows Update errors
- •Basic networking — Wi-Fi troubleshooting, VPN setup, proxy configuration
- •Email client setup — Outlook configuration, calendar sharing, email signature management
- •Hardware basics — understanding of laptop/desktop components, peripheral connectivity, basic repairs
- •Ticketing systems — familiarity with ServiceNow, Freshdesk, or similar platforms
- •Written communication — ability to write clear, professional support emails and knowledge base articles
The DWS track also accepts any 3-year degree with 50% marks. Strong English communication (both written and spoken) is especially important for this customer-facing role.
Career Growth Across Tracks
All three tracks offer structured career progression within Cognizant:

Internal mobility is possible at Cognizant. After 12-18 months, you can apply for cross-track transfers if you develop relevant skills. Many DWS analysts transition into Multicloud or IT & ISO roles over time.
Which Track Should You Choose?
Use this decision framework to guide your preference:
- •Choose IT & ISO if you enjoy coding, databases, and data-driven work. You should have a CS/IT-related degree and be comfortable writing SQL and basic programs.
- •Choose Multicloud if you are fascinated by infrastructure, servers, and cloud platforms. You should enjoy problem-solving in complex technical environments and be comfortable working in shifts.
- •Choose DWS if you excel at communication and enjoy helping people solve problems. You should be patient, articulate, and comfortable in a customer-facing role.
- •If you are unsure, focus on preparing well for the Online Assessment. Strong performance gives you more options during track allocation.
Remember that track allocation is ultimately at Cognizant's discretion based on business needs. Indicating a preference helps, but does not guarantee assignment to that specific track.
